Drought conditions trigger rainfall forecasts in France and fire restrictions in Belgium

Persistent dry weather is affecting parts of Europe, prompting different responses in France and Belgium.

In France, a temporary break in the dry spell is expected next week as Atlantic disturbances move in. Rainfall is forecasted to be most significant on Wednesday and Thursday, particularly in regions ranging from Aquitaine to the Massif Central and Occitanie. However, these showers are expected to be modest and may be insufficient to end the ongoing drought or fully replenish reservoirs and hydroelectric production.

In Belgium, the Governor of Brabant Wallon has issued a police decree effective until October 1 to mitigate wildfire risks caused by continued dry conditions and moderate winds. The decree prohibits smoking in forests, discarding reflective objects near vegetation, and lighting outdoor fires in forests, fields, or gardens. While barbecues are permitted if kept away from vegetation and closely monitored, lanterns are strictly prohibited.
