Central Europe faces severe drought and water shortages
Severe drought conditions are impacting Central Europe, particularly in the Czech Republic, Germany, and Slovakia. In the Czech Republic, precipitation levels have reached only 66 percent of the long-term norm, leading to critical water shortages. The Sázava river has fallen below hydrological drought thresholds, and up to 90 percent of small hydroelectric plants have ceased production due to low water levels.
To combat the shortage, the State Material Reserves (SSHR) are deploying water tankers to municipalities, such as those in the Klatovy region, to replenish local reservoirs. In Germany, the farmers' association has warned of significant crop losses and potential total failures due to the lack of moisture.
Experts suggest that these extreme weather patterns are becoming a permanent feature of the landscape, necessitating systemic changes in how water resources and farmland are managed across the region.
