Drought hampers new street trees in Teplice, Czech Republic

In the town of Teplice, a street‑level reconstruction of sewers and water pipes forced the removal of mature trees that had previously protected the infrastructure. The municipal authorities replaced them with newly planted saplings, but an ongoing dry summer has caused the young trees to wilt and die. Local officials, including head of the environmental department Dagmar Teuschelová, note that the saplings lack the deep root systems of older trees and are especially vulnerable without supplemental watering. Residents have expressed concern over the repeated cycle of tree loss and the difficulty of repairing underground utilities without damaging green cover, while experts cite the high cost of non‑invasive excavation methods as a barrier to better solutions.
