Drought impacts maize crops in Felipe Carrillo Puerto
Prolonged drought in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto has caused significant losses for maize producers in rural communities. Farmers report that the lack of rainfall has hindered crop development, drastically reducing the possibility of a regular harvest.
In the community of Nuevo Israel, where approximately 200 people rely on farming, producers have faced severe financial setbacks. One farmer reported investing over 20,000 pesos into two hectares of maize, only to see the growth stunted by the weather and the remaining meager crops consumed by animals.
To mitigate these losses and sustain their livelihoods, many farmers are seeking support through the federal 'Producción para el Bienestar' program. Despite temporary technical issues with the registration system, producers have been attempting to re-enroll to ensure continued agricultural activity and food security for their families.
