Drought impacts water security in Pasangkayu and Sleman
Various regions in Indonesia are facing significant water shortages due to drought conditions. In Pasangkayu, West Sulawesi, the El Niño phenomenon has depleted groundwater reserves, causing wells to run dry or produce turbid water. This has impacted approximately 42,200 residents across 17 villages, forcing many to purchase clean water for daily needs such as drinking and cooking.
In Sleman, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has distributed 680,100 liters of clean water since April 2026 to combat local drought. As of October, the distribution has expanded to cover seven sub-districts, with the highest volumes sent to Turi, Tempel, and Moyudan. The agency has completed 155 distribution trips to support both residents and the local agricultural department.
