Drought impacts potato harvests in Germany and Austria
Agricultural producers in Germany and Austria are facing significant challenges due to persistent drought and high temperatures, leading to reduced potato yields and smaller tuber sizes.
In Germany, farmers such as Bernhard Schnaufer report that while quality remains good, yields are below average. Dry soil conditions have caused mechanical damage to some tubers, affecting their appearance and storage life. Farmers have noted that irrigation is becoming increasingly essential; in some cases, unirrigated fields saw yield losses of approximately 50 percent.
In Austria, the food processor Weinbergmaier is navigating similar weather-related difficulties. Despite the impact of extreme weather on local raw material supplies, the company intends to maintain its commitment to its 160 Austrian contract farmers. Gerald Spitzer, managing director of Weinbergmaier, emphasized the importance of long-term supply contracts to provide planning security amidst unpredictable natural conditions.
