Germany agriculture faces massive losses from drought
A severe drought in Germany is causing significant agricultural losses, with the Deutsche Raiffeisenverband estimating a loss of approximately three million tons of grain and rapeseed since mid-June. These losses are projected to result in revenue decreases of roughly 600 million euros. The total grain harvest is expected to reach 40.6 million tons, a decrease from the 45 million tons recorded in 2025.
The drought is also creating a critical fodder shortage, particularly in southern regions like Baden-Württemberg, where farmers report having 30 to 40 percent less feed available than usual. This scarcity has forced some livestock producers to conduct emergency slaughterings to reduce herd sizes. Additionally, the meat industry, specifically pig farming, is facing an existential crisis due to rising costs and falling revenues.
While the Deutsche Raiffeisenverband does not expect immediate shortages in domestic grain supply for consumers, the industry remains concerned about logistics. Low water levels in rivers are complicating the transport of grain, fertilizer, and feed. Federal Minister Alois Rainer has briefed the cabinet on the situation, noting that the drought poses risks to land and forestry, including increased wildfire and pest risks.
