Drought Threatens European Potato Supply, Raises Value of Danish Crops

Severe drought and heatwaves across much of Europe have shifted potato market expectations from a surplus toward a potential shortage. BJ‑Agro warned that the lack of rainfall could limit yields, prompting renewed demand for Danish potatoes, which benefit from the country's larger irrigation capacity.

BJ‑Agro director and potato specialist Benny Jensen emphasised the need for intensified nutrition and plant‑protection measures to sustain growth under the stress. He recommended focused leaf fertilisation with nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and micronutrients, noting that many fields show low potassium levels that can cause early maturity and reduced starch content. Applying products such as Flex N18 and Flex Bladkali at prescribed rates could help maintain tuber development and overall quality.

The combined effect of reduced European output and heightened Danish supply capacity could make each additional ton of Danish potatoes increasingly valuable on the market.
