Drought threatens rice harvests in Pati and Pringsewu

Severe drought conditions across several Indonesian regions are threatening significant rice crop failures. In Pati Regency, the drastic reduction in the Silugonggo River's water levels has placed approximately 2,655 hectares of paddy fields at risk of failing to harvest. The most affected area is Gabus District, with 764 hectares vulnerable, followed by significant risks in Pati, Margorejo, Jakenan, and Kayen districts. Local authorities are coordinating with the BBWS Pemali Juana to increase water supplies to the Silugonggo River to mitigate these losses.

Similarly, in Pringsewu Regency, Lampung, approximately 170 hectares of rice fields are in critical condition due to prolonged dry weather influenced by El Nino. This drought occurs despite high grain prices, which could have otherwise increased farmer income. To combat the shortage, the Pringsewu government has implemented emergency measures, including the distribution of water via boreholes and pump systems for 60 hectares of affected land. Some farmers in the region have begun transitioning to short-cycle horticultural crops that require less water to maintain livelihoods.
