Drought triggers fish deaths in Hungary and water shortages in Germany

Severe drought and rising temperatures are causing significant ecological and economic damage in various regions. In Hungary, the Rétimajor wetlands have seen approximately 150 tons of fish die due to overheating water and depleted oxygen levels. Operators estimate losses at 165 million Forints (approximately €420,000). The crisis is attributed to a water distribution imbalance where irrigation for agriculture takes precedence over the downstream fish ponds.

In Bad Wörishofen, Germany, the drought has caused groundwater levels to drop dramatically, forcing the shutdown of several Kneipp water therapy facilities. Local authorities have redirected remaining water supplies to a park pond to ensure the survival of Koi carp. Mayor Daniel Pflügl noted that the town, known for hydro-therapy, is facing a dilemma between conserving drinking water and maintaining infrastructure that aids in urban heat protection.
