Germany faces severe 2026 drought, water restrictions and garden crisis
Germany is experiencing an extreme drought in the summer of 2026, with historic low water levels recorded in the Rhein, Donau and Elbe. The drought has prompted more than 80 municipalities to impose water‑extraction bans, limit pool filling and restrict lawn‑sprinkler use to specific hours, as seen in Munich and other cities. Scientists at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) describe the event as a 50‑year‑type drought, noting that soil moisture is depleted to depths of up to 1.8 m across most of the country. The German Weather Service (DWD) had already classified the spring as “exceptionally sunny and markedly dry.”
Gardeners are urged to adopt immediate protective actions: mulching with a 5 cm layer of organic material, watering in the early morning or evening, and selecting drought‑resistant perennials such as Sedum, lavender, and yarrow. These measures aim to retain soil moisture, reduce evaporation and sustain plant health while water supplies remain constrained.
