Drug International Limited factory fire in Tongi causes toxic smoke
A major fire broke out at the Drug International Limited production facility in the Cherag Ali area of Tongi, Gazipur, on Wednesday morning. The blaze, which affected the factory's Unit-2, involved an antibiotic production plant and consumed pharmaceutical compounds, raw chemical ingredients, and manufacturing equipment.
The fire caused widespread panic, forcing workers to flee as thick, dark smoke plunged the facility into darkness. While no casualties were reported, many residents and workers experienced immediate health issues, including stinging eyes, throat irritation, and respiratory distress. Medical experts warned that the inhalation of combusted medicines and synthetic raw materials poses significant toxicological risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing pulmonary conditions.
Emergency response efforts involving the Fire Service, the army, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) brought the blaze under control after approximately four hours. Local authorities and medical officials have urged residents to evacuate the smoke path and seek medical attention if breathing difficulties develop.
