Drug policy and substance trends emerge in Austria

Discussions regarding drug consumption rooms and the rise of trend drugs like Kratom are gaining attention in Austria. While countries like Switzerland and Germany have utilized supervised consumption spaces for decades, Austria currently has no such facilities, despite rising drug-related deaths. In response, the Graz city council has voted to examine the possibility of establishing a consumption room based on the German model, and advocates in Innsbruck are calling for protected spaces for vulnerable youth.

Concurrently, Kratom is emerging as a trending substance among young people in Austria. The drug is easily accessible, often sold in vending machines in Vienna under misleading labels such as textile dyes or incense. Reports of health risks, including a near-fatal cardiac arrest in Tyrol, have highlighted the dangers of the substance. Former users have described the drug's effects ranging from stimulant-like properties at low doses to sedative effects and dependency at higher doses.
