Drug traffickers receive prison sentences in Indonesia and Malaysia

In separate legal proceedings in Indonesia and Malaysia, individuals involved in large-scale drug trafficking have received significant prison sentences.

In Palembang, Indonesia, a defendant named Andrika was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Palembang District Court for trafficking 488.7 grams of methamphetamine, locally referred to as ‘Chinese salt’. The sentence was lighter than the 12-year term and 1 billion rupiah fine requested by prosecutors. The court ordered the destruction of the narcotics and the seizure of a mobile phone.

In Ipoh, Malaysia, the High Court sentenced 46-year-old Liew Wan Wah to 30 years in prison and 24 strokes of the cane. The sentencing follows a case from 2021 involving the trafficking of over 77 kilograms of methamphetamine. The court ruled that the two prison terms for the separate charges would run concurrently, while the corporal punishment remains a total of 24 strokes.
