Drugstore prices in Austria significantly higher than in Germany

A study by the Chamber of Labour (AK) Tirol reveals that branded drugstore products in Austria are, on average, 24.27 percent more expensive than in Germany. The comparison involved 42 identical care and cleaning products available in both countries.

In some instances, price discrepancies were extreme; for example, Hansaplast Sensitive Strips were found to cost up to 152.65 percent more in Austria than in Germany. While the cheapest basket of goods in Austria cost 145.49 euros, the cheapest in Germany was 127.72 euros.

Political reactions have followed the report. Peter Wurm, consumer protection spokesperson for the FPÖ, criticized the Austrian government for failing to protect consumers and noted that high taxes and levies further contribute to the cost of living. Wurm argued that the government's current approach is insufficient to address the financial burden placed on families and pensioners.
