Wiefelstede truck accident spills 22 tons of watermelons
A 52-year-old truck driver caused a major traffic incident in Wiefelstede, Lower Saxony, after losing control of his vehicle and colliding with a tree. The driver, who was found to have a blood alcohol level of 4.09 per mille, caused the right side of his trailer to break open upon impact.
As a result of the collision, approximately 22 tons of watermelons spilled onto the road and surrounding areas. The accident required the Westerholtsfelder Straße to be fully closed for approximately eight hours to allow for recovery operations and cleanup.
The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital. German police have initiated criminal proceedings against him for endangering road traffic and have seized his driver's license. Because the driver does not reside in Germany, a security deposit has also been ordered.
