NHTSA data highlights risks of impaired driving during sporting events
Large crowds exiting stadiums, such as Dodger Stadium or SoFi Stadium, present unique risks for impaired driving due to the combination of alcohol consumption, late finishes, and heavy traffic.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 11,904 people died in U.S. crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers in 2024, accounting for approximately 30% of all traffic fatalities. While specific data for stadium-related crashes is not isolated, the NHTSA notes that alcohol can impair driving ability even at blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) below the legal limit of .08, which resulted in 2,028 deaths in 2024.
Safety experts recommend establishing a game-day travel plan before alcohol consumption begins. Effective strategies include designating a sober driver, scheduling rides in advance, using public transit, or arranging pickup points away from heavy vehicle congestion.
