Dry spell threatens maize crops in Ghana and Niamina

A prolonged dry spell is threatening food security and livelihoods across West African farming communities. In Ghana’s Sissala East and Sissala West districts, farmers report that maize and soybean crops are withering due to nearly a month of inadequate rainfall. Farmers noted that maize plants are turning yellow and crops that had begun to tassel are drying up, leading to fears of significant financial loss and crop failure.

Similarly, in Niamina and surrounding areas, farmers are expressing anxiety as the continued absence of rain leaves crops struggling at a critical stage of the season. Many farmers lack irrigation capabilities and are forced to wait for rainfall that has not arrived. Local producers are calling for government intervention, including support through fertilizer and other resources, to help salvage what remains of their harvests.
