Household management: Tips for energy efficiency and food safety

Domestic management of appliances and food storage plays a critical role in both energy efficiency and food safety. Regarding energy consumption, washing machines can be significant contributors to household electricity bills, potentially consuming around 255 kWh annually. To optimize usage, experts recommend avoiding hot water cycles, as heating water is a high-energy process, and ensuring machines are loaded to their maximum capacity to avoid wasting water and electricity on partial loads.

In terms of food safety, the Portuguese Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE) warns against the practice of refreezing raw meat after it has been thawed. While freezing slows microbial growth, it does not destroy bacteria. Thawing allows bacteria to multiply, and refreezing only pauses this process, leading to a higher microbial load when the food is thawed a second time, which increases the risk of food poisoning.

Additionally, the size and capacity of refrigerators are vital for proper food preservation. An appropriately sized appliance ensures stable thermal stability and adequate air circulation. Overly large units can create air pockets that hinder temperature distribution, while units that are too small and overcrowded prevent air from circulating, potentially accelerating food spoilage.
