Poland strengthens emergency warning systems amid security threats

Poland is significantly upgrading its national emergency warning systems in response to heightened security threats from the Russian Federation. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński announced that the number of automatic alarm sirens in the Lublin Voivodeship will increase from approximately 350 to over 1,000 by the end of the year. This expansion aims to counter risks posed by drones and missiles near the border.

In addition to siren upgrades, the government is conducting emergency response drills in the Lublin and Podkarpackie provinces. These exercises involve the Ministry of Interior and Administration, the State Fire Service, and local volunteer fire departments to teach citizens how to react to alerts and utilize the nearly 3,500 available shelters in the region. A new Cell Broadcast application is also expected to launch this year to provide direct mobile alerts.

Nationwide, heightened security levels remain in effect. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has extended various alert levels, including BRAVO for cyber threats and infrastructure protection, and the newly introduced CHARLIE level for railway areas. Authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant regarding suspicious activities, such as unattended luggage or unusual behavior in public spaces.
