Désirée Blanco retires from top-level refereeing

Swiss referee Désirée Blanco has announced her immediate retirement from top-level football due to health concerns. The 43-year-old Bernese official had originally planned to continue officiating until the end of the 2026/27 season.

The decision follows a cardiological examination in early August that revealed irregularities. Blanco, who has used a pacemaker for four years, stated that while she feels generally healthy and fit to engage in sports, she no longer wishes to subject herself to the extreme physical demands of elite football.

In addition to health considerations, Blanco cited new responsibilities in her professional and family life as factors in her decision. Her final match took place on Sunday at St. Jakob-Park during the Super League fixture between FC Basel and FC Lugano.

Blanco’s career includes serving as a 13-time national player and officiating 67 men's matches. The Swiss Football Association recognized her exceptional career, noting her transition from a national player to an international-level referee.
