Nigeria's DSS arrests impersonator in Abuja and warns of Sokoto school attacks

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Moferewa Maiye in Abuja for allegedly impersonating a security officer. Maiye was apprehended at a hideout in Wuse II while wearing a DSS tactical uniform and carrying a fake pistol. He is accused of using the disguise to intimidate and extort money from motorists and commuters. During interrogation, Maiye claimed the equipment belonged to his late brother, Monday Maiye, who was reportedly a DSS operative.

Separately, the DSS has issued a security alert regarding Sokoto State. Intelligence indicates a tactical shift by terrorist and bandit groups, who are reportedly moving their focus from primary and secondary schools to targeting universities and other tertiary institutions. The agency warned that these planned attacks could lead to the kidnapping of students, lecturers, and staff, potentially undermining public confidence and Nigeria’s international reputation. The DSS has urged the Sokoto State Government to immediately upgrade security measures at higher education facilities.
