Düsseldorf Airport launches new light rail connections
Düsseldorf has officially launched two new light rail lines, U80 and U81, providing the first direct connection between the city's light rail network and Düsseldorf Airport. The project, which cost approximately 336 million euros, includes a new 1.9-kilometer track section and an underground station at the airport terminal.
The U80 line connects the airport terminal directly to the city center and the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof), with a travel time of roughly 18 minutes. The U81 line serves as a link between the airport and the Messe Düsseldorf exhibition grounds and the Merkur Spiel-Arena during major events.
The infrastructure expansion follows a seven-year construction period and was inaugurated by North Rhine-Westphalia Minister President Hendrik Wüst and Düsseldorf Mayor Stephan Keller. The new lines offer a practical alternative to existing S-Bahn and bus services, aiming to improve accessibility for the airport's millions of annual passengers and international trade fair visitors.
