Düsseldorf all-day schooling expansion faces educator concerns

In Düsseldorf, the expansion of all-day schooling (OGS) has introduced new flexible time models for the 2026/27 school year. Families can choose between models ending at 14:00, 15:00, or 16:00. Currently, approximately 90 percent of families utilize these models, with the 16:00 option being the most popular at 54 percent.

While the city presents this as a benefit, educators from the Education and Science Workers' Union (GEW) have expressed concerns regarding the financial structure. Fees apply to households with an annual gross income exceeding 60,000 euros if care extends beyond 15:00. Staff members fear that the significant cost jump for later care may discourage families from choosing longer hours, potentially leading to budget cuts and job losses in afternoon childcare sectors.
