Düsseldorf begins 4.85 million euro canal construction project

Construction has commenced in Düsseldorf on the Diepenstraße to build a 400-meter rainwater canal and renovate a 300-meter sewage canal. The project is expected to last approximately 18 months, concluding in March 2028, with total costs estimated at 4.85 million euros.

Due to narrow streets and construction pits up to five meters wide, the Diepenstraße will face temporary closures in various phases. Full closures will be necessary during the initial eight-week phase to accommodate a 200-ton crane. To minimize disruption, work is scheduled to begin during the autumn holidays. Local authorities recommend using designated drop-off zones on Dreherstraße for schools and kindergartens, as access for private vehicles will be heavily restricted. The new rainwater system aims to modernize drainage by preventing untreated runoff from flowing directly into the Düssel river.
