Düsseldorf court releases drug suspect on 250,000 euro bail

The Düsseldorf District Court has suspended the arrest warrant for Alexander B., a 34-year-old real estate agent accused of involvement in a massive cocaine trafficking network. The defendant will be released on the condition that he pays 250,000 euros in bail, reports to the police daily, and surrenders his passport.

Prosecutors alleged that since 2016, the defendant and four accomplices imported 12 tons of cocaine from South America, valued at approximately 100 million euros. However, the court noted that the large-scale cocaine charges could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Evidence from decrypted encrypted phones was deemed inconclusive because the devices were shared by multiple users, and some conversations were conducted in Serbian, a language the defendant reportedly does not speak.

While the defendant denied the cocaine charges, he admitted to the illegal trade of marijuana in the kilogram range. His 31-year-old wife, Lisa B., also admitted to distributing 12.8 kilograms of marijuana in exchange for 45,000 euros. The trial is expected to reach a verdict on Tuesday.
