Düsseldorf expands bicycle network amid budget constraints

Düsseldorf is continuing the expansion of its bicycle network to improve safety and comfort for cyclists. Recent developments have seen the creation of more than five kilometers of new or optimized cycling facilities. The city is also working on two major cycling routes, with approximately nine kilometers already completed.

While the city aims for sustainable mobility—noting that 70 percent of all trips are currently made via environmentally friendly means—future projects face uncertainty. The implementation of planned improvements for 2027 and beyond depends heavily on the approval of the city's budget, which is currently described as strained.

Mayor Stephan Keller noted that cycling's share of total traffic has increased from 18 to 21 percent in recent years. Current and upcoming measures include new cycle lanes, bicycle streets, intersection improvements, and various small-scale safety enhancements such as new markings and pictograms.
