Düsseldorf faces major summer traffic disruptions and airport crowding

From July 27 until September 1, the city of Düsseldorf will fully close the Friedrichstraße to through traffic as part of construction for a new hotel. Individual and bicycle traffic will be rerouted via the Talstraße, Mecumstraße and the Südring, while local deliveries will still be allowed. The city assures that shops remain accessible and that residents will receive updates by mail. The local Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) criticised the short notice, saying the closure adds further strain on businesses already coping with ongoing construction.

At the same time, Düsseldorf Airport expects a summer rush of more than 3.4 million passengers, with around 23 000 scheduled flights between July 17 and September 1. Over 220 000 travelers are projected to pass through the terminals during the opening weekend of the holidays, leading to long queues. Airport officials advise passengers to check in online, use self‑bag‑drop kiosks and, where possible, reserve security‑check time slots to ease congestion.
