Düsseldorf hosts Flag Football World Championships and Olympic qualifiers
Düsseldorf is hosting the Flag Football World Championships, which serve as the first direct Olympic qualifying tournament for the Los Angeles 2028 Games. The event features 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams competing for championship titles and a limited number of Olympic spots.
Flag football is a non-contact, five-on-five version of American football where players pull flags from opponents' belts instead of tackling. The NFL is heavily involved in promoting the sport globally through partnerships with the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), viewing it as a key tool for international expansion.
In addition to the championships, the Green Bay Packers have collaborated with the NFL and Equip Sport to install twelve sport stations across Munich. These stations provide free access to flag football equipment and other gear to encourage local participation ahead of upcoming NFL games in Germany.
