Düsseldorf memorial site honors victims of Nazi-era deportations

Members of the Wupperfrauen e. V. association recently visited the Alter Schlachthof memorial site in Düsseldorf. The site, which now houses a library for the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences, served as a collection point during the National Socialist era.

Approximately 6,000 Jewish people, including many from Wuppertal, were registered and stripped of their belongings at this location before being deported from the Derendorf freight station to ghettos and concentration camps in Eastern Europe. The exhibition within the building preserves historical details of these deportations, including stone troughs that were used to hold livestock but also served as places where infants and young children were held during the process.
