DTC Brands Face Challenges in Customer Loyalty Program Effectiveness

Research indicates a significant disconnect between corporate investment in customer loyalty and actual consumer perception. While marketers dedicate approximately 51.5% of total marketing budgets to loyalty and CRM, McKinsey reports that roughly two-thirds of established loyalty programs fail to deliver value.

A primary driver of this failure is low redemption rates. While enrollment is often treated as a key metric, members who actually redeem rewards spend 25% more than those who remain inactive. Common consumer frustrations include rewards taking too long to earn or redeem, points expiring too quickly, and receiving generic offers.

Despite brands splitting budgets relatively evenly between customer acquisition and retention, two-thirds of consumers believe companies prioritize new customers over existing ones. This sentiment is even higher among frequent shoppers, with 70% of monthly repeat customers feeling undervalued. While price-based perks remain a top motivator for 70.8% of consumers, product quality continues to be a stronger driver of long-term loyalty than discounts alone.
