DTU research project targets hidden heat loss in Danish homes

A new research project titled ‘Air Repair’ is investigating hidden heat loss and inefficient ventilation in Danish housing. Led by the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in collaboration with cleantech company Brunata and various social housing organizations, the three-year study utilizes data from 2,000 apartments across 20 buildings.

Researchers are installing climate sensors to monitor temperature and humidity in real time. The goal is to map how improper ventilation settings and heat loss through windows contribute to rising energy bills. By analyzing these connections, the project aims to develop digital warning systems and data models that can translate technical measurements into clear economic consequences for consumers.

Successful implementation could potentially reduce average heat consumption by up to 20 percent. Beyond cost savings, the project seeks to improve indoor climates by mitigating issues such as moisture, dry air, and mold growth through better management of ventilation and heating systems.
