Dua Lipa, Callum Turner’s Sicily Wedding Triggers Protests and €268 M Economic Boost

British pop star Dua Lipa and actor Callum Turner celebrated their marriage with a three‑day ceremony in Sicily after a civil wedding in London. The main event took place at the historic Villa Valguarnera in Bagheria, near Palermo, where the couple exchanged vows under a gazebo and were later serenaded by Sir Elton John, who performed “Your Song”. Celebrity guests included Donatella Versace, Charli XCX, Mark Ronson, Grace Gummer, Joe Alwyn and many others; DJs Carl Cox, Martin Garrix, David Guetta and Peggy Gou provided party music and fireworks lit the night sky.

The celebration was heavily secured by police, carabinieri and private guards, and large sections of Palermo’s historic centre were temporarily closed to traffic and public access. Local residents protested the disruption, posting signs such as “Palermo is not for rent”, and some were offered £5,000 compensation for inconvenience. A study by JFC estimated the wedding’s total economic value to Sicily at €268 million, of which about €5.3 million is direct spending, €3 million indirect, €1.7 million induced and €5.5 million legacy, while the brand‑value component accounts for roughly €253 million of media exposure.

The event’s cost has been reported between $1.73 million and £1.5 million, and it has drawn both praise for boosting tourism and criticism for the perceived privatisation of public spaces.
