Dua Lipa Opens Manifesto Library of Banned Books in Porto

British singer Dua Lipa, of Kosovar‑Albanian descent, inaugurated the Manifesto Library at the historic Livraria Lello bookstore in Porto, Portugal. The pop star curated a collection of 100 titles that have been banned, censored, or challenged, arranging them into four thematic sections—Power, Control, Voice and Memory. Among the works are Margaret Atwood’s *The Handmaid’s Tale*, Reginald Dwayne Betts’s *Felon*, Salman Rushdie’s novels and Olga Tokarczuk’s writings. The library opened to the public on 27 July, offering visitors the chance to read books that have been removed from circulation elsewhere.

Italian author Chiara Valerio praised the project, saying it “teaches people to disobey” and highlights the cultural importance of preserving forbidden literature. The initiative forms part of Dua Lipa’s Service95 Bookclub, which promotes reading and discussion of socially relevant works.
