Dua Lipa's Palermo wedding triggers protests, £5,000 payouts to locals

Pop star Dua Lipa and actor Callum Turner held a three‑day wedding celebration at the 18th‑century Villa Valguarnera in Palermo, Sicily. The lavish event featured performances by Elton John and top DJs and attracted high‑profile guests such as Charli XCX, Donatella Versace and Kylie Minogue.

To accommodate the festivities, the city closed Piazza Croce dei Vespri and Piazza Sant’Anna, sparking protests from residents who posted signs reading “Palermo is not for rent” and “Our square is not your living room.” In response, Lipa compensated affected locals with a payment of £5,000 (about €5,800) each.

Mayor Roberto Lagalla defended the disruption, citing an estimated €268 million (≈ $307 million) economic boost for Palermo and increased international visibility. The wedding’s opulence and the community backlash highlighted tensions between celebrity events and everyday urban life.
