Dua Lipa's Palermo wedding sparks resident protests
Pop star Dua Lipa and actor Callum Turner married in Palermo, Italy, in early June 2026. The ceremony attracted more than 200 guests, including fashion designer Donatella Versace and singers Charli XCX and Olivia Dean, and featured a back‑less white dress and an outdoor reception under historic baroque buildings.
The city sealed off Piazza Sant’Anna and Piazza Croce dei Vespri, limiting traffic and access to nearby streets. Residents were required to sign non‑disclosure agreements and received €5,800 in compensation for the loss of balcony views and disruption. Local businesses experienced reduced foot traffic, and protest signs reading “Palermo is not for the rich” and “Our place is not your living room” appeared throughout the historic centre. Mayor Roberto Lagalla expressed regret over the inconvenience and condemned the negative stereotypes linked to the city.
The event turned a celebrity celebration into a local controversy, highlighting tensions between high‑profile tourism events and the daily lives of Sicilian residents.
