Dua Lipa's Sicily wedding triggers protests and security lockdown

Pop star Dua Lipa and actor Callum Turner held a three‑day wedding celebration in Palermo and nearby Bagheria on the Sicilian island. The ceremony was staged at historic sites, including the Palazzo Gangi in Palermo and the Villa Valguarnera in Bagheria, a former Cosa Nostra stronghold that was restored by an Italian princess.

Local residents in Palermo opposed the event, arguing that the city’s streets were being closed for a celebrity affair. Protesters posted signs reading “Palermo is not for rent” and “Our spaces are not your playground,” and the city responded with increased police presence, road closures, a drone‑flight ban and confidentiality agreements for nearby residents. Celebrities such as Elton John, Donatella Versace and Harry Styles were reported to be on the guest list, while the wedding had already been legally registered in London.

The combination of high‑profile guests, a former mafia venue, and public dissent turned the celebration into a flashpoint for local tension in Sicily.
