Dual‑air‑flow tweak boosts portable air conditioner efficiency up to 40%

A simple DIY modification adds a second air conduit to a mobile air‑conditioner, allowing it to draw outside air for the condenser while a separate duct expels hot air. The change can raise cooling performance by roughly 10‑40 % with only a few dozen euros of parts, though it may increase wear on the fan and expose the unit to higher external temperatures.

Air conditioners work by moving heat rather than creating cold. A refrigerant circulates through a compressor, condenser and evaporator: heat from the indoor air is absorbed, turned into a high‑pressure gas, released outdoors, then condensed back to liquid to repeat the cycle. Mobile units pull indoor air for both cooling and heat‑rejection, which can cause a slight pressure drop that draws warm external air back in. Split or multi‑split systems use separate indoor and outdoor units to avoid this loss, and inverter technology can modulate compressor speed for smoother temperature control and lower energy use.
