Duane Davis sentenced to 40 years to life for Tupac Shakur murder

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a 63-year-old former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. The sentencing took place in a Las Vegas courtroom on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, nearly three decades after the fatal drive-by shooting.

Davis was convicted in August of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon. Although he was not accused of pulling the trigger, prosecutors successfully argued that he masterminded the attack and supplied the firearm. The prosecution's case relied heavily on Davis's own public statements, media interviews, and his 2019 memoir, ‘Compton Street Legend’, which effectively voided previous immunity agreements.

The motive for the murder was identified as retaliation for a physical altercation involving Davis's nephew, Orlando Anderson, and members of Shakur's entourage at the MGM Grand casino hours before the shooting. Shakur was killed on September 7, 1996, while traveling in a vehicle with Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight.

During the hearing, Judge Carli Kierny criticized Davis, stating he could not simply walk away from taking a man's life and future. Shakur's family, including his sister Sekyiwa Shakur, provided emotional testimony. Davis's attorney, Michael Sanft, has announced plans to appeal the verdict.
