Jury selection has commenced in Las Vegas for the murder trial of Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis, the only person charged in the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur. Davis, 63, faces one count of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote a criminal gang. He has pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution’s case relies heavily on Davis’ own public statements, including his 2019 memoir, ‘Compton Street Legend,’ in which he detailed his involvement in the night of the shooting. While Davis now claims those accounts were fabrications intended to sell books, prosecutors intend to use them to establish his role as the ‘shot caller’ who orchestrated the attack and provided the weapon.

The shooting occurred on September 7, 1996, near the Las Vegas Strip, following an altercation at the MGM Grand involving Shakur, Death Row Records co-founder Marion ‘Suge’ Knight, and Davis’ nephew, Orlando Anderson. The trial, presided over by Judge Carli Kierny, is expected to last between four and six weeks. If convicted, Davis faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
