Duane Davis murder trial begins for Tupac Shakur killing

Nearly 30 years after the fatal drive-by shooting of rap icon Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas, the murder trial of Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis has officially commenced. Davis, a 63-year-old former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, is the only person charged in connection with the 1996 killing. He faces one count of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further, or assist a criminal gang.

Jury selection began on Monday, August 10, 2026, in Clark County District Court. Prosecutors allege that Davis orchestrated the attack as retaliation for a confrontation involving his nephew, Orlando Anderson, which occurred earlier that evening at the MGM Grand. While Davis has pleaded not guilty, the prosecution's case relies heavily on his own 2019 autobiography, ‘Compton Street Legend,’ in which he discussed his involvement and presence in the vehicle during the shooting.

Marion ‘Suge’ Knight, the co-founder of Death Row Records who was driving the vehicle containing Shakur at the time of the attack, has expressed his desire to remain uninvolved in the proceedings. The trial is expected to last between four and six weeks. If convicted, Davis faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
