Duane Davis on trial for orchestrating Tupac Shakur's 1996 murder
Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, is on trial in Las Vegas for his alleged role in the 1996 fatal shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur. Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, faces one count of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote or assist a criminal gang.
Prosecutors contend that Davis orchestrated the drive-by shooting as retaliation after Shakur and Marion “Suge” Knight were involved in a confrontation with Davis’ nephew, Orlando Anderson, following a Mike Tyson boxing match at the MGM Grand. While authorities do not claim Davis pulled the trigger, they allege he planned the attack and provided the weapon.
Davis has pleaded not guilty. His defense argues there is no direct evidence he directed the shooting and suggests the prosecution is relying on unreliable witnesses. The trial, which is expected to last approximately one month, may hinge on Davis’s 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” which contains details about the conflict that investigators say helped revive the decades-old cold case.
