Duane Davis trial begins for alleged orchestration of Tupac Shakur murder

The murder trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, accused of orchestrating the 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur, has commenced in Las Vegas. Davis, 63, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote or assist a criminal gang. If convicted, he faces a life sentence in prison.

Prosecutors argue the shooting was a retaliatory act following a physical altercation involving Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, and Shakur’s entourage hours earlier. Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal stated that while Davis did not pull the trigger, he planned the attack and provided the weapon to a passenger in a white Cadillac used in the drive-by shooting.

Key evidence presented includes video of the earlier altercation and Davis’ own published memoirs, in which he discussed his involvement in the incident. The defense, led by attorney Michael Sanft, has dismissed the prosecution’s narrative as “fiction,” questioning the validity of evidence after nearly 30 years and citing flaws in the original investigation.

The trial is expected to last several weeks, with the prosecution planning to call between 35 and 45 witnesses. Witnesses appearing on the first day included former Las Vegas police officer Garry Dale and onlooker Ingrid Stokes.
