Duane Kuiper announces throat cancer diagnosis

San Francisco Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper has announced he is undergoing treatment for throat cancer. The 76-year-old announcer, who has been with the franchise since 1986, shared the news via a team statement, noting that he began receiving care at Stanford Medicine last week.

Kuiper clarified that this diagnosis is unrelated to a previous cancer battle in 2021, which required chemotherapy and caused him to miss part of that season. He expressed optimism regarding his prognosis and his ability to successfully complete treatment.

The announcement comes at a poignant time for the Giants’ broadcast booth. Kuiper’s longtime partner of over three decades, Mike Krukow, is approaching his retirement at the end of the 2026 season. While Kuiper will miss several upcoming broadcasts to manage his treatment schedule, he intends to return to the booth to celebrate Krukow’s final games and remarkable career.
