Dubai Airports to award Dh55 billion in DWC expansion contracts

Dubai Airports is expected to award Dh55 billion in new construction contracts for the expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) by the end of the year. Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Dubai Airports, confirmed that Dh13 billion worth of contracts are already under construction.

According to Griffiths, the project has already seen significant activity, including 10 million work hours committed over the last 15 months, the installation of 17,000 piles, and the movement of 45 million cubic metres of earth. Despite regional tensions and global supply chain strains, Griffiths stated that construction has not slowed and that suppliers are being mobilized globally to ensure timely completion.

The expansion is a central part of Dubai’s long-term aviation strategy to increase passenger and cargo capacity. The project aims to address a projected capacity crunch at Dubai International Airport (DXB) by 2032. Griffiths described the eventual shift of operations to the new hub as ‘the world’s largest airport transition programme by a very significant margin.’
