Dubai-Iran trade persists despite UAE suspension of official exchanges
Despite the United Arab Emirates announcing a suspension of trade and financial exchanges with Tehran due to regional conflict and Iranian retaliatory actions, economic ties between Dubai and Iran remain resilient. In the markets of old Dubai, traditional Iranian goods such as saffron, cumin, pistachios, and zereshk continue to be available, though some items have become scarcer or more expensive.
Wholesalers report maintaining supply chains by utilizing alternative routes, such as Omani ports, to bring goods into the emirate. Additionally, some products like saffron are being transported via air from Mashhad following a brief interruption in flight links.
Dubai hosts a significant Iranian community, estimated at several hundred thousand people, which has historically played a major role in the emirate's commercial growth. Analysts note that during previous periods of heightened sanctions, such as in 2012, Dubai successfully argued to Abu Dhabi that maintaining trade with Iran was essential to the UAE economy.
