Dubai launches massive desalination project to secure water supply
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is advancing the Hassyan desalination project, one of the world's largest facilities designed to address increasing water demand driven by population growth. The project, costing approximately 3.38 billion dirhams (920 million USD), is expected to produce roughly 818 million liters of desalinated water per day once fully operational.
Upon completion, the facility is projected to meet the drinking water needs of 2 million people. The plant utilizes reverse osmosis technology, passing seawater through specialized membranes under high pressure to remove salt and impurities. A key feature of the project is the integration of solar energy to power the desalination process, aiming to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions compared to traditional methods.
Construction for the initial phase is largely complete, with all stages of the project scheduled for completion by the first quarter of 2027.
