Dubai RTA launches AI-powered smart driving test system
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched an upgraded Smart Test System (STS) for light-vehicle yard tests. The new system utilizes artificial intelligence, computer vision, and advanced data analytics to monitor learner performance in real time without human intervention in the final result calculation.
Key features of the technology include Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning, which tracks vehicle movements with an accuracy of up to two centimeters. The system provides learners with visual evidence of their performance, allowing them to replay their journey and view an interactive 3D map that pinpoints the exact locations of major or minor errors.
To ensure safety and compliance, smart cameras monitor whether learners check their mirrors and blind spots, as well as their hand positioning on the steering wheel. Additionally, facial recognition technology is employed to verify the identity of the learner. Sultan Al Akraf, Director of Drivers Licensing at RTA’s Licensing Agency, stated the system aims to ensure consistent assessment criteria and help learners identify specific areas for improvement.
