Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum dies at 76; Dubai declares mourning

Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a prominent member of Dubai’s ruling family and younger brother of Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has passed away at the age of 76. Following his death on Monday, September 21, Dubai authorities declared a 10-day period of official mourning, during which flags across the emirate will be flown at half-mast.

Sheikh Ahmed held several high-profile positions, including Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security. He was a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and served as the commander-in-chief of Dubai’s Central Military Region. His influence extended significantly into the private and sporting sectors; he was a long-time president of Al Wasl Sports Club and played a key role in developing the UAE’s horse racing industry, including the establishment of the Jebel Ali Racecourse.

Leaders from across the United Arab Emirates, including President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, have offered condolences, praising Sheikh Ahmed’s lifelong contributions to the nation’s development. The funeral procession was led by Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and the late Sheikh Ahmed was laid to rest in the Umm Hurair cemetery.
