This Arctic passage, which travels through the Bering Strait and along the Russian northern coast, can reduce travel time by approximately half compared to the traditional Suez Canal route. Utilizing this path allows shipping companies to avoid the Red Sea, where vessels have faced attacks by Houthi militias amid regional conflicts.

The route is a key component of China’s planned ‘Polar Silk Road’ to improve trade access between China and Europe. However, the passage is only viable during summer months when ice levels permit transit without icebreakers. While 23 container ships utilized the route last year, environmental groups warn that increased traffic could accelerate polar ice melting. Consequently, several major shipping companies, including Hapag-Lloyd, MSC, and CMA CGM, have signed a pledge to avoid these waters to mitigate environmental impact.
